trendy: comes and goes
Here in Brazil, since the emerging of the "world fashion", people always judged the clothes in this way, if it's brand-name it worths, or if it isn't the clothe can't be great. Usually they think that only brand-name clothes can supply their necessity. On the other hand, some people start to see that we have many opitions about places to buy new clothes, where aren't brand-name, but can be confortable, inexpensive and beautiful like brand-name clothes.
People generally buy brand-name clothes because those clothes are more confortable, during more time, make people look weel groomed, are sophisticated.Even so, they spent a lot of money, normally they are selfish, esnobish and consumirism. They act like this, because they can show for everybody how much money they have, with their excessively high prices.
The population who buy brand-name clothes, are helping to make more money for the economy, more jobs, project the name of the country, but the small industry can get bank rupt.
Brand-name clothes are positive when you know how to use, and when you are conscious about all the things that are envolved on it. And can be negative if you use just for think that you are better than everybody. We have just to feel confortable and beautiful, this is important!

I am Berta in Caracas, a collegue of Jose Antonio.
I could not agree with you more.
It is true some "expensive" clothes fit well, on elooks really good and last forever. What is really wrong is, as you say, to show your wealth off to other people.
I am a rebel in that area. I work at a university and as a teacher always wear jeans and sandals (don´t even bother if I wear flip-flops of the cheapest kind) and will even wear the same shirt every other week. I want my students to know I don´t care about clothes and they should not either at times when you just want to work and study.
Of course, I am clean, ha, ha, and so are my clothes, ha, ha, and will dress a bit more formally if I have a meeting or have to give a presentation at a conference. But I love wearing comfortable simple clothes.
Best, Berta
